FTP instructions

Easynet can build your web pages for you at very economical rates and even teach you haw to maintain them. (See below) If you prefer to build your own, here are some tips to minimise the common mistakes people make.

After you've made your Web Page(s) all you need to do is FTP (file transfer protocol) them to your web space on our server. We use all standard FTP settings, so your FTP program (or your web publishing program) needs only the following:

Host Name: ftp.easy.com.au
Host type: Automatic, or UNIX standard
Remote Server initial directory: not needed
You will need to log in with your username and password

To view your pages, type www.easy.com.au/~username in your web browser's address box, and there you should have it - your first web pages published on line in your home directory. When repeatedly updating web pages the web browser on your computer may continue to show an earlier version. Clicking refresh a couple of ties sometimes shows the new page that everyone else will see. If not you need to go into your browsers settings and clear old stored files ie the old version of the page, forcing it to look at the new one.

Note, If you have a domain name hosted with Easynet the web pages are still published as above. They can then be viewed both at your domain http.//www.yourdomain.xxx or at www.easy.com.au/~username

Tips

To get the process working try building a simple two page linked site with graphics and publishing it first, before you build your full site only to find it needs completely re-building.

When making pages, first place all graphics and other elements into ONE folder on your computer. Then create you web pages in the same folder. This way your links will point to the correct locations. Your initial home page should preferably be called index.html  ( It can alternatively be called index.htm or default.htm or default.html)  You might have several other pages called xxx.htm or xxx.html and perhaps some graphic files called xxx.gif or xxx.jpg etc. avoid capitals, especially for the file suffixes (.gif  .html  etc.) All you need to do then is run your choice of FTP program to upload your pages to Easynet. When files are being transferred select auto as some will be binary and others will be ASCII (If there is no auto option select binary for graphics and ASCII for text and web pages)

i.e. WS FTP or Cute FTP are good.

If you need help creating your web pages, the world wide web has a vast amount of information on setting up web pages, and how to make them look good etc.  Or we can build your initial pages and train you in how to subsequently look alter them and modify them.

Finally, you will need some software to create your pages, most people will already have Microsoft Front Page Express which comes with IE4 and IE5. Shareware.com also has many different page creation programs you can download. Many are FREE.

A good example of Commercial Web Creation software is Microsoft Front Page. This is the full (you need to pay money for it), version of Front Page Express, we often use this here at Easynet due to it's simple interface, and it's WYSIWYG interface (WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get and simply means you create your page by placing pics and words on the screen like you do with a word processor, then what you see should be what ends up on the web pages, and should look similar on most people's browsers).

Most commercial software has a publish button. These are often difficult to get going. If they work, they re-label files and links to point them all to your home directory on our server, and they include their own FTP software to transfer the files. (It is often still a good practice to force the web creation software not to use folders for sounds, graphics etc, but to store everything in one directory on your computer while you are creating it)

Do not use 'Front Page Extensions' Unix servers do not usually support them.

We have a selection of CGI scripts in our servers. The best way to make a form is to build a form, then modify it by copying the CGI call up code from one of the Easynet forms in this web site and modifying it to suit.

Many of our customers are forced to use a friend of a friend, or a relative to build their web pages. We are then often contracted to fix these pages without changing their appearance. This includes making them work when viewed by more varieties of computer, various we browser programs and different screen resolutions. Most people can only test what they have built on one or two computers (MAC or Windows) and one browser type and revision.

We can also quote to enhance the pages to get them better positions in search engines, and to register them with search engines for maximum impact and maximum appearances in search engine search results.
